Professional Background:

I received my Masters Degree in Social Work from The University of Texas in Austin in 1983. I interned/then worked at La Hacienda.

Treatment Center, for addiction, in Hunt, Tx. This was an amazing experience, where I was able to assist in people's healing from substance abuse amid the deer and the beautiful landscape.

From there I moved to Corpus Christy, where I was an in home Hospice therapist. This too, was an amazing experience in a very different way, helping people to die, hopefully with some sense of peace. For a young woman it was an expanding experience and, I believe, taught me to appreciate my health and every day of my life in a much deeper way. Then I moved to Houston where I was a staff therapist at Laurelwood Hospital, an inpatient mental health facility. Then, in 1988, after having my son I began my private practice here at Woodlands Family Institute and have been here for 32 years!

Clinical Focus:

I honor the inherent value and strength in people and their families I treat and operate from a model of wellness. I believe that people should be active in their own treatment and thus welcome and respect my client's input at all times. I see my role as being a co-creator with each person involved, to assist them in finding their own answers.

As one of my client's said, "to hold the flashlight" for them. As a result, my approach is collaborative and active, and I use many different modalities. Being eclectic, I draw from cognitive-behavioral models, solution based models, teaching models for parenting, and communication training for couples and families. I love working with mindfulness and meditation practices, with an emphasis on increasing self-compassion.

Interests:

I have so many things I love to explore and learn about, and so many people I truly care about! Nothing has been more important to me, or more impactful, than raising my son. He is 32 currently, and his story is powerful and inspiring, because he was diagnosed with ADHD as a small child. He struggled in every area of his life due to this, academically and with sports. However, because he was determined and discovered his passion and gifts, he has been able to thrive. He is currently a writer, editor and filmmaker and even made it to the Forbes 30 under 30 list!! Because of him, I can now add "film actress" to my resume and I have a new hobby!

Along with that, I adore my entire family and every opportunity I get to spend with them!

I've always been passionate about exercise. Having been a competitive swimmer as a child is where those roots were born! I got my black belt (along with my son) in Tae Kwon Do in my thirties, and since, enjoy yoga, pilates, cycling and weight lifting.

To recharge and relax I love creative things..coloring, jewelry making and handwork. I adore reading and constantly tell my client's about new books! I love almost every kind of music!
