Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a set of approaches that combines elements from many different treatment disciplines to reduce the effects of disturbing life events. When you are very upset, the brain’s normal processing system becomes overwhelmed, freezing painful emotions in a way that makes you vulnerable to re-experiencing the anguish.

Effects of EMDR Treatment

EMDR seems to have a direct effect on the way the brain processes information, restoring normal emotion processing, and allowing you to no longer have to relive the intensity of emotion when the event is recalled. You still remember what happened, but it is less disturbing. EMDR can be thought of as a physiologically based therapy that helps you see disturbing material in a new and less distressing way.
