Melissa Engel, LPC-Intern, NCC

melissa.2Credentials: Licensed Professional Counselor Intern, National Certified Counselor

Professional Background: I received both my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and my Master’s degree in Counseling from Sam Houston State University.

Throughout my undergraduate studies, I worked at a domestic violence shelter and went on to be a case manager for MHMR through graduate school. I worked with individuals in crisis in an inpatient hospital setting as a Crisis Rehabilitation Counselor doing individual and group counseling. Currently, I work in a partial hospitalization setting as a Therapist doing assessments, individual and group therapy. I also run Depression and Bipolar support groups through DBSA.

I am a member of both Spring Creek Counseling Association and Texas Counseling Association.

Clinical Focus: I am interested in working with individuals of all backgrounds with a primary focus in clinical issues that include: depression, anxiety, stress management, self esteem, life transitions, relationship issues, anger, communication problems, domestic violence, abuse, social skills, and managing everyday life stressors. Together we will work towards your goals to establish growth and regain control over your life.

Treatment Philosophy: I use a variety of different methods that are tailored to meet the needs of my clients with a special emphais in Cognitive-Behavioral therapy which is based on the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors. CBT is focused on helping the client become aware of thought distortions which are causing the client psychological distress, as well as the behavior patterns that are reinforcing them, and to help the client make necessary adjustments. I use a collaborative approach where the client and therapist work together to explore challenges. My goal is to develop within my clients a greater self-awareness that will build confidence, self-esteem, and provide them a greater capacity to effectively navigate the complex challenges of life.

Personal: I enjoy spending time with my large, extended family and my dog “Bailey”, traveling with my husband, musicals, and long distance running. Recently, I ran my first half marathon and plan on tackling a triathlon in the future. I’m always ready for new challenges, but also enjoy to just relax!
