Treatment Philosophy: I have always wanted to help people improve the quality of their lives. This is my ultimate goal with each patient. I feel that most clients already have the answers they are seeking within themselves. I am simply there to help facilitate their path to finding these answers. I utilize many Cognitive-Behavioral techniques in my practice of therapy. This theory explains that negative emotions are largely the result of flawed and erroneous thinking. Thus, in therapy, I work to help change deep-seated patterns of negative thinking in order to create a more positive outlook and more positive emotions. I feel that the client should always be an active participant in the therapeutic relationship, and that this relationship is essential to therapy that produces change.
Clinical Focus: I have a passion for working with a wide variety of disorders, but have a particular interest in working with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, as well as other anxiety disorders. I am also interested in the link between anxiety and depression, as these two disorders are often intertwined and difficult to differentiate. In addition, I am interested in working with those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and their families. I lost my grandfather to Alzheimer’s Disease, so I have a personal understanding of the devastation that this disease brings to its’ victims and their caregivers and families. Other areas of interest include Bipolar Disorder, Post-Partum Depression, parenting, anger management, self-esteem, PTSD, and communication issues.
Professional Background: I have a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology as well as a Master of Arts in psychology. I have worked in various settings, including the correctional setting, providing mental health services to the prison population. I have a great deal of experience working with the severely mentally ill, as well as with substance abuse and addiction. One of my favorite clinical experiences was completing my graduate practicum at the VA Hospital, working with veterans suffering from PTSD.
Personal: I have been married for nearly 12 years now and have two beautiful children, ages 6 and 1 year. The thing I enjoy most is spending time with my family. But, I also enjoy reading, scrapbooking, photography, music (particularly the blues, although I listen to just about any type of music), and watching movies. I have recently developed a love for riding with my husband on his Harley. Another recent endeavor of mine has been gardening, and although this does not come naturally for me, I am determined to develop a green thumb!
